Topic: Success - VDJ & HP Mini

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I had been reading about netbooks and have been thinking about getting one to use for internet, word processing, email, etc for traveling thus eliminating the need to haul my dj laptop with me when I don't really need it.

On Sunday while at Office Depot I saw one that caught my eye and picked it up for $350!

Specs:

HP Mini 110
Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz
1gb ram (am upgrading to 2gb)
Display Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family
XP Home Edition SP3

I couldn't resist trying VDJ 6.0.1 on it. I can't remember the resolution of the monitor but vdj shrinks the skin so it all fits on the screen...maximized it runs off the bottom and can't move down to see it.

I tested my VCI 100 on it with my mapper...it works.

Took the unit to the club to use with the HD2500. I had some issues with my mapper. I copied the file from the club cpu to the mini but it did not function the same. I had to remap fx1, fx2. fx3, jog mode button, and jog. Once those were set how I wanted time to mix!

Audio Only..no problems using HD2500, M Audio Connectiv (usb power), and powered external mixer.

The cpu has only 3 usb ports so all were taken. The cpu ran at a constant 20 or so percent (wireless disabled of course but Norton Internet Security - which I hate and will be swapping for Trendmicro - running) except when loading tracks when it would bump up to 80 percent.

The cpu has a vga monitor output. I did not run any videos at the club as I did not have a vga cable to run to the external video switcher. In my tests earliier this evening I ran the software with internal soundcard and used videos. The software/cpu did not hiccup when loading mpegs/vobs!

It will come as no surprise how surprised I am!

I took it easy on the search function so not surprised it did not freeze/crash.

A friend of mine has a ASUS netbook that he brings as a backup.

He claims to have done video on it, But I havn;t been to his office for a demo yet.

Anyone else had similar results as me?

I use the Samsung NC20 with the Denon HC-4500 controller in my club and it's perfect for audio. Video would be another thing however .....

I run my TCV setup with an Acer Aspire One. I picked it up for $220, and it works great. The only optimizing I have done is to disable the wireless adapter.

I've messed around with at home my girlfriends Advent 4213 Netbook

Intel Atom N270 Processor
1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512MB cache
Windows XP Home
1GB Memory & 160GB HDD
10.2" Widescreen Display

I tried it with just mp3's (wouldn't even think about playing videos on it) my RMX and with timecodes/maya44 and it was fine. Although loading track's the CPU hit 85% once or twice, but the audio was perfect.

I was quite surprised with the little thing, lol

I'm anxious to try videos. I might give it a shot Saturday for a little bit. I don't know know. I really wanted to keep this little thing out of the smokey environments but curiosity is killing me!

I've been kicking around the idea of getting one of these netbooks for a while. I am satisfied with my laptop, but i wanted it as:
a.) a backup to my laptop
b.) a dedicated "net" computer to download new tracks on the fly at a club or event - as I am weary of using net on my gig laptop.

I'm glad people are having good experiences with these things - makes my decision alot easier!

I played around with mine this weekend with VDJ (in testing mode and making audio mixes to see how it performed for long periods of time) and didn't have any issues. It's fine for just audio but certainly not for video mixing, with mine anyway. Video does play fine if it's just one but mixing two at a time forget it. The audio is clean but the video is extremely jumpy and the video transitions are super slow.

I'm not going to be using mine on a regular basis with VDJ. I bought this mini to use strictly as a laptop since I don't use my gig laptop online. This is so much easier to carry.

I bought a MSI Wind U100 upgraded to 2 Gigs of Ram and it does good for audio
I use it as my Back up and dedicated NET Machine. I download and scan files before it goes to my primary laptop
Runs windows XP home and works well.
