hi guys i have purchased an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 pci soundcard ( http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile2496.html ), could someone just give me a quick lesson on how to connect my TT's and mixer.
my understanding is that the TT's connect to the 4 phono channels that are in the card, so 2 stereo inputs. then the mixer is connectted to one of the outputs and then to the amp. though im not sure if this is right how does my mixer control the software? or does it not control it at all?? please please someone explain.

That card isn't 4 stereo pairs in and out from what I can see, its only 2. Which means unless you are going to mono split everything to get enough channels, it isn't going to be able to do what you want.
It annoys me that soundcard manufacturers list a single side of a stereo pair as an output, when virtually everytime, you need 2 PER OUTPUT.

so then how do you explain the use of the ESI maya 44???? the M-Audio 2496 has pretty much the same interface as the ESI 4in 4out, 2 sets L and R and a breakout point. it is my understanding that a 4in 4 out is quite sufficient for use with 2 TT's and a mixer. the ESI maya 44 was recomended to me but i saved a bit of money by getting the 2496.
the 2 sets of phonos you see on the card itself are able to act as inputs or outputs. there is then more phono's on the breakout cable,
it is also my understanding that my TT's will plug direct to the card and the breakout cable will be used for whatever else it is i need to do.
my question then, again, is how do i hook it all up, and does it allow my mixer to control the software??? to me it seems a bit over the top that the soundcard will allow my mixer to act as a midi controller.

Because of exactly what I said in my previous answer.
Both companies are not quoting like for like.
The ESI Maya has 2 STEREO outputs and 2 STEREO inputs, via 3.5mm stereo jacks (so one socket, provides two channels).
The card you listed has only 1 STEREO out and input, but via RCA connectors, so each socket on the card only provides one channel.
From what I have seen, the breakout cable is for optical and midi.
If you are saying that the drivers can convert the use of some of the sockets and the breakout cable, then you're still a channel short if you plan to use timecodes. You'll need 2 stereo in, and 2 stereo out, so thats 8 RCA sockets... even with the breakout cable you're only up to 6.
With regard to your final point, using your sound cards midi interface will only allow you to connect a mixer to it if that mixer is midi capable. If you have a non midi mixer, you control certain aspects of the software using your mouse, and the mixer performs the other functions in hardware, totally removed from the software (eq'ing/monitoring etc)

so basically what your saying is a 4in 4 out sound card isnt worth diddly squat??? and i need an 8in 8out ?????? why must i find out these things AFTER i purchase products.
this is now the second time this has happened. WTF guys,,,,, WHAT CARD DO I NEED???? 4IN/OUT or 8IN/OUT
what a waste of time money and effort this is proving to be.....
so now ive found out i cant use the 2496 or the m-audio 192 even though they are both 4in/out cards. but i can use an esi 4in.out card. AAARRRGGGJHHHHHHHHHH

For timecode, you need at least a 4 in / 4 out card - Such as ESI Maya44 USB, Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ or 8 DJ, etc.

You're getting totally confused with sockets and channels, because some soundcards are stereo sockets, and some are mono.
You need 4 in / 4 out.. thats 8 sockets in TOTAL if on RCA. Or, if you use something like the ESI Maya 44, it has 4 sockets, but thats still 8 channels, because each socket is STEREO, unlike an RCA output.
I repeat again, your card is NOT a 4 in 4 out, its a 2 in, 2 out MONO.. which is the same as 1 in/ 1 out STEREO.

so what your saying then is screw any card up the wrong un if it uses phono and go buy one that has 3.5 jacks...
i am so gonna get upsetand cry in a minuite lol..... maya 44 it is then. is there???? btw???? and alternative to the maya of any other cards people would recomend??? pci that is

Basically, you have to be careful that when a sound card says it has 'x' number of outputs, you need to know whether they are talking about stereo or mono outs.
The product description for your card does clearly say 1 stereo in and 1 stereo out (via 4 rca sockets).

oh... i kinda missed thet, well i do know this, i will be purchasing a MAYA 44 this weekend and some leads to plug everything in.
im gonna need 4 x 3.5mm jack to 2 phono, yes????
my beliefe on connecting things up is this
my TT's plug into say chanel 1 and 2 then chanel 3 and 4 are used as outputs to create the loop back into my mixer. then my mixer plugs into my amp as normal.

If you are going timecode.. then you plug the inputs from your TTs into the soundcard inputs, and the outputs go from the soundcard to each channel of your mixer, and your mixer, as you say.. outputs to your amp as normal.
