Loose the fogger. Most high end event halls will not allow you to use it, fire codes prevent them. Develop a game plan. I.E. What type of weddings? Traditional, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Christian? ect. ect. ect. While it is true you can easily cross over from one socio-economic type to another at first it is best to keep to one area. Usually the same type you grew up in. For example, last night I was asked if I could DJ a wedding for "steppers" and turned the job down. My experience in that arena is limited, and I would hate to be the person who ruined some brides prefect day.
Which brings me to my second point. Do not take every job you can get. Take the jobs you feel comfortable with. If you grab anything, and everything, without proper experience you will ruin some ones big event.

EXCELLENT advice from Teary .........
if you can get a mentor do that
the more service you provide the better you will feel , the better the clients will feel and the more money you are worth
if you ask for help here you will get lots of responses , just give yourself the chance to succeed by asking your question
well in advance of your event.......
speaking of which .....do not change major items like software , operating systems , databases etc , without giving yourself
a large window of opportunity to fix the things that inevitably go wrong , before any upcoming event on your business calendar

Nice post Chuck and not a Monkey in sight. Ime proud of you mate. That new medication has started to kick in.
Only one thing to add realy:- Spares Spares oh ye and erm Spares.
Spare Bulbs/Power cables/Fuses/Speaker lead and so on . Dont blow a night over a 10 pence fuse or 5 buck cable. Plus if you carry a set of spares, nothing will ever break. A fact as proven as "You will always loose one sock in the dryer".

I say hold off on wedding until you get the basics of DJing down. If your new to the business I would start with smaller parties like graduations and work up from there. You need to hone your MC voice before you can take on a wedding and or corporate gig. Right now there are a ton of graduation parties to try and scoop up. Good luck.

If you are going to play weddings and corporate events you are going to need a second microphone. (Not sure how you will do this with a 2 channel mixer)
I agree with Teary, lose the fogger it will cause you nothing but problems for those type venues.

good advice Renee' ...even though you are the weaker sex ........
i think he should start with generic events like birthdays in suburbia , nothing too ethnic ......
for someone who does mobile events a public address type mixer might work i use a stand alone headphone amp with a mackie
mixer and i can connect lotsa outboard devices and 6 mics

forget the strobe light as well, you may have someone in the audience that suffers epileptic fits and this will induce one depending on how much they are susceptible to one.

practice, practice, practice. if you can, practice with your actual equipment that you use in your show.
you will start to feel more and more comfortable. people can sinse when you look new.

Begin marketing. Join online communities like this one to continue learning. Build or get a website. Your customers are going to want to know what services you offer.
You could ask a DJ with a good reputation in your area to mentor you to help you get some mor knowledge.
When your ready to start small, make some business cards and flyers and start handing them out.
When you start accepting jobs get yourself a company contract for your gigs.
Hope everrything works out at your Grad party.

so what else will i need? besides a bigger mixer and no fogger and no strobe? is all this enough?
Posted Sun 07 Jun 09 @ 2:29 pm
keep it simple to start with and work your way up. This is as true for the equipment as it is for the gigs.
Say Chuck
I followed your advice. Just finnished the drying, put the socks in that little bag thing. It actualy worked. I counted them all in and counted them all back out not one sock missing.
One problem though. You should have told me it only works once man cos now I cant find the bag.
Oh S**t incomming.

one thing you maybe missing is experience. no matter what equiptment you have or even knowledge if you never dj for a crowd you can ruin an event. get experience. Dj for you neighbors bar b que if you have to just work for a crowd till you are comfortable
