Topic: How is positive DB Level possible?

Hi,

I´m wondering everytime I look at those positive values in the gain window. How are they possible at all?

Take the following situation. I have a song that was obviously recorded too loud, the sound is distorted. From a technical POV the distortion occurs, because the waveform ramps up too maximum (-0 DB), reaches the edges, and stays there at maximum power for a short time. The timeframe that has the constant power (meaning -0 DB) at peak makes your speakers distort. So far so good - but too my understanding a waveform therefore never can exceed -0 DB. But when I load this track into VDJ, and I turn of all GAIN-automatics, VDJ will show the tracks original gain value. And in this case it´s a positive value e.g. 1.4.

Can someone from the technical staff explain how virtual DJ calculates the positive Gain Values? I would really like to understand how this works.

0dbvu Is not the point that distortion (clipping) occurs,
but is considered the optinim level for the audio device.
Clipping occurs at some point above 0dbvu, and the difference between
the two is called the Headroom.
The Higher the headroom the better the quality of say your soundcard.
Pro level is +4db with clipping occuring somewhere between +12db to +18db.
