Topic: Listening to both channels through headphones

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hello All,

I downloaded the trial for 5.0 and like the product so far. I have 2 sound cards setup and working properly so I can cue through the headphones and listen to the mix through the PA. The one thing I don't see how to do is to listen to both channels through the headphones in PFL/cue mode. When I press one channel's PFL button the other channel's PFL button deactivates. I want to listen to both at the same time (not the mix and 1 PFL, but 2 PFLs).

Can this be done and if so, how?

Thanks!
Bill

yeah, many skins have a headphone mix slider at top :) this will adjust how much blend of the opisite deck you want to hear in your headset prelisten.

Or you can make such a shortcut feature to your midi controller or keyboard, by asigning headphone_mix to keys in VDJ keyboard settings tab.

The default skin has a headphone mix slider at top

Hope that helps ;)

Thanks for the fast respnse. OK, duh, that works :-) But then that opens up a new question - how do I hear what is coming through the PA through my headphones (which is actually what I thought the "mix" end of that slider did). If it's set to mix and I have one channel at 0 volume, I still hear it through the headphones.

As you can tell from my questions, I mix almost exclusively through the headphones.

Thanks!
Bill

thats a bit unusual...

Are you saying you want to prelisten what comes out of master out?

it can be done easily in hardware, if you have a midi controller or mixer...

If not you can emulate it in software (since its not a common thing to want)
One usually wants to prelisten the new track in the mix, and not really master out...

By default PAGE-UP and PAGE-DOWN moves the crossfader for master out.

Now to add a prelisten master out functon for headphones, we need to make it so that the same buttons will ALSO do the same with headphone:

1. Add a shortcut to PAGE UP, with the value : HEADPHONE_CROSSFADER >> -128
2. Add a shortcut to PAGE DOWN, with the vaule : HEADPHONE_CROSSFADER >> +128

there u go! ;) master prelisten (emulated)

This will only work when you move crossfade by keyboard (page up/down), and will NOT work if you move crossfader in skin by mouse

I am finally going to throw my BDC2000 in the garbage after a few years of use. I held on to the BDC only because of a single feature. I cannot live without having the "Premix" option offered on the BDC. By premix, I mean that I can listen to either deck by turning the knob from one deck to the other working just like the cross fader but on the headphone of course. How can I accomplish this same feature? going with a VCI-100, haven’t chosen a soundcard yet

1. What type of sound card are you using?

2. Are you running this in internal mixer mode or external mixer mode?

3. If you're running 2 sound cards, in the sound setup menu, set it to 2 sound cards, select your primary sound card for the master output and your secondary soundcard for headphones

4. Output should be Master 1st, Headphones 2nd

5. At the very top of VDJ, you will see you headphones logo next to a cue/mix slider.

Once you have your soundcards configured properly, you should be able to adjust those sliders so you can preview your mix the way you want it.

Or if you have a multi channel sound card, you can run 1 line to channel 1 on the mixer and another line to channel 2 on the mixer. Previewing your mix this way ultimately depends on the type of mixer you have. Some mixers wont allow you to preview 2 songs at once but you should always be able to preview the song you are cuing up while listening to the master output.

Thank you. I purchased the Prosonus firebox yesterday and will set up this week. I will follow your recommendation and see what happens. I have a Rane (8 channel) external mixer that has all those good monitoring features if I can get VDJ and the frebox to cooperate with the Rane.

Well, got my Prosonus and VCI-100 today. So far works like a dream and played for 6 hrs without a glitch. Next I will take my BCD2000 apart and send it back to Behringer one resistor at a time. It’s not too bad except VDJ would never make it through 3 hrs without hanging or messing up somehow. Definitely the Rane external mixer is the way to go.
We shall see…
