Topic: Laptops that can flawlessly mix video - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

Does anyone own a laptop that was able to flawlessly mix video in Virtual DJ without having to fuss with codec, pluggins, and other tweaks?

If your laptop was able to do this "right of the box" then please share your laptop's make, model, and specifications with the group

Thanks !

Ha, ha, I see no answers to this:)))
Funny

Ok let me start..
Mine is not perfect but is close enough..

Asus F8Sa
14" wide screen, Vista Ultimate SP1
2.2 GHz
3GB RAM (+2 was added custom)
200GB Seagate custom added 7200RPM HDD (original was 160GB on 5200RPM)
Ati Mobility HD2600 (512 dedicated up to 1024MB shared)
So basic model was about $1,200, mine customized was around $1,500

I also use:
Hercules RMX console & Technics SL 1200's for external control..

The downsides are:
- Cannot use XP, cause DirectX 10 graphics cannot be run on XP. So I had to settle with Vista
- Half a second freeze upon loading next video (doesn't affect audio), which they say causes Vista/DirectX10

Other than that it works fine.
So I don't think there is a perfect laptop out there that can run video flawlessly at the moment untill DX10 or/and Vista problem is solved.
Perhaps some older 17" laptops or something..

Toshiba Satellite P100 PSPAGA + Echo Indigo DJ PCMCIA sound card.
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7400 2.16GHz
GeForce GO 7900 GTX 512mb DEDICATED RAM
17"WSXGA+ TruBrite
1GB + 1GB DDR2 533 (Corsair Value Select)
100GB-7200rpm SATA (Hitachi Travelstar 7K100)
750GB external USB drive (all 3500 DVD vob videos are on this, mainly Promo Only).
Windows XP (Came with VISTA, I took it off)
Beat mixes DVD vob files with LPCM, MPEG or DD audio perfectly. Last show was 9 hours straight. NOT ONE GLITCH the whole night.
I have the audio card working through the ASIO 4 channel (2 for headphones, 2 for PA output) interface (this works flawlessly every time).
Have not tried it without the Echo Indigo DJ for more than half an hour, but with the laptop's inbuilt card it seemed to work fine.

My old Toshiba Satellite P100 PSPA3A would NOT and still does not mix videos properly. It has shared RAM on the video card (Geforce GO 7300 256mb DEDICATED + 256mb SHARED) and I believe this is the cause.
Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2400 1.83Ghz
GeForce GO 7300 256mb DEDICATED + 256mb SHARED RAM (this is called 512mb TurboCache)
17"WSXGA+ TruBrite
1GB + 1GB DDR2 533 (Corsair Value Select)
100GB-7200rpm SATA (Hitachi Travelstar 7K100)
Windows XP

I'm actually wondering if those ASUS eeepc's will run Virtual DJ just for mp3's. Would be a compact little unit to DJ on! Good for a backup.

About video mixing, there are 2 factors to take care:
* video card (we currently advise ATI with no shared RAM)
* video codec quality (a MPEG4 codec from Microsoft will be different from a MPEG4 codec from DivX Inc. and so you have consequencies on the speed of decompression)

(PS: Having Cyberlink PowerDVD installed on your computer can improve quality apparently)

Take a look at the Acer Aspire 9920 20 inch screen duel 2.24 processor , 500gb HD, High definition etc..... 4gb ram , Nvidea Gforce 8600m GT graphics with 512 dedicated mem + shared. It weighs in at 7.2 kilos or 9.5 lbs . Its one hell of a media centre.

I think most people are putting way to much emphasis on the laptop itself. I am going to upgrade my laptop on wednesday simply because its free and I want to fix one problem that bothers me. I wanted to point out that I have no problems with my system whatsoever. I'm running a 1.86 quad core duo processor with a Mobile Intel 965 Express (piece of crap) video card. I think I paid $599 for it at Best Buy. I can mix VOB files perfectly. The problem that bothers me is the screen freezes for a second when I load a new file. The sound and the video doesn't stop. No one knows this but me. So the machine I'm getting has the NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTS in it. Watch....I'll probably have all kinds of problems with that. The point I'm trying to make is the settings and the way the laptop is setup is more important than the hardware. For instance I was having a video freeze problem when I loaded a video after playing alot of MP3s. I was using eSATA external drives. Come to find out when I switched to USB instead, all problems went away. Once again faster is not always better.

I honestly think this happens to more than just lappy users as I experience it myself, and also with the new 5.1, however it is only with automix.

Sony Vaio Fe41z or any Fe or FZ series... I'm using the FE41Z with VDJ and Echo indigo PCIE Sound card (only hard change was HD from 4200rpm to 7200rpm)... I mix videos and music without any HITCHES.. NEVER had a lockup, crash, or lagging in the system.. I have recommended this lappy to most of my DJ friends.. for those that have brought have NO complaints..!

What is working - HP Pavillion dv6835nr. Has a piece of crap video card (Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 - Up to 358MB shared memory) and has no problems. Mixes VOB videos seemlessly. Best Buy price $849.99. Bought them on sale for $599.00.

What was tested - Gateway P-6860 FX with a Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS in it. 512 Dedicated DDR3 ram. Best Buy price $1,349.99. As I expected. The high end Laptop had tons of problems. Smoking laptop. Couldn't run VDJ worth a crap. Had automix issues with 5.1 as well as 5.0.7. Also was lagging with video, sometimes crashing.

Next to be tested - Toshiba A305-S6843. It has a ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3470 in it. VDJ says their software works better on an ATI card. I guess we will find out.

I got a budget Gateway from Best Buy last fall. It had Vista. It also was used as my office away from home. Well, I finally got XP on it.

So...... I tried to tweek and install VDJ. Well, plays MP3s quite well. So I throw a VOB at it. Flawless. Hmmmm.... I rip several VOBs and let automix/autoplay go at it. Was very impressed. Used the ext VGA out. It only has 8mb video memory and based on Intel Graphic Chipset.

Got to 121deg f. Loop worked and was quite smooth too. Even did not choke on a 600mb AVI movie.

No extra CODEC. Default install. ASIO for a cheeep 5.1 generic USB device. Even loads VOB nicely from USB.

Kinda making me think lappy is a good thing.

This is being geared towards my ceremony/backup/presentation system.
