I have a similar HP laptop to you, but with slightly different spec.
I've been having the same problem with the demo version. If i move a lot of files arund into virtual folders, it just freezes. Music carries on but no buttons work and the CPU monitor freezes too.
Are you using Vista?
Do you have anything else plugged in like a cordless or usb mouse? I dosconnected mine and just used the touchpad and now it works fine.
I think the drivers for some things like cordless mice and external plug in things are not completely up to scratch with Vista yet, and that was my problem.

no i have windows xp media center edition

Ouch media center is a bitch... I always had problems like that, freezing and such. I solved it all by blowing into my computer fan. Okay i coughed for 15 minutes after i did that, but now my comp stays very cool and runs very smooth. I also have an external cooling pad.
Don't underestimate the cooling: if outside, it doesn't feel hot, that doesn't mean it isn't hot inside. :)
I'm guessing its another media center issue tho...

does heat really make a big difference cause the outside of my laptop is hot around by the mouse pad. but the laptop does not say its overheating. also will windows profesional work better than media center? wait i still don't understand cause after it freezes & i restart the program it will play for another 2 hours. so how can heat cause this problem. i also use 3 of my usb ports one for my maya usb souncard, wireless mouse, & a turtle beach audio output 4 my headphones. come on pros help me out i just want this 2 be reliable so i don't look like a fool in the club i don't use ttables or cd players all i use is the program thats all.

i removed my wireless mouse and i was able to play for 4 hours maybe more but i had too stop. i guess the wireless mouse was slowing me down. what do you experts think?

Glad it helped, even though we are using different operating systems, it was the wireless mouse that was causing me problems too.
Just out of interest, what make of mouse were you using?

i have this laptop w/ xp m.c.e. .......i use a wireless mouse ,but my soundcard is a presonus firebox, which has a firewire connection ......i'll tell you what i have done.....
you have 2 main problems
1) you need to make your system a li'l pimped out for audio in general......for that see dj in norway's sticky at the top in general discussion.........everything there will help and not hurt.....some items are meant to make any pc work better and faster, some items are meant specifically for VDJ
2)your other problem is your operating system is XP media center edition, which is well known to have many problems......
i'll tell you a few specifics that i did that seemed to help.......i have all power mgmt settings on never, my default windows firewall is off, my wireless connection is off, screen saver off, windows auto update off, i have no irq conflicts , my secondary ide channel is set on dma if available/ ultra dma if you do anything at all if you do anything at all and even if you change anything at all..................................make a restore point first

for what it's worth, i can rip, download , and play simultaneously......i also routinely run audio in traktor, back n forth in and out of Vdj doing video , plus do all the usual like download analyze even change screens w/ powertoys, and i have a crap video card the ATI radeon express 200 .....pimp out yer system, that's what you need......it'll take an hour up to an afternoon depending on yer computer knowledge
it's not
the mouse the file type those aren't the problem
my setup runs well with a crap video card and actually i haven't eliminated that many services
as you can see......having 2gigs of ram which is a good amount doesn't magically fix all problems

should i upgrade to windows xp profesional and get an external hard drive?
Posted Wed 28 Feb 07 @ 2:51 pm
I run Windows XP Pro with a 2.8 mHz processor with 768mb of ram and also suffer from intermittent freezing problems. Last Sat night it froze on me three times! Man, I wish this problem could be solved as it makes a supposedly professional DJ look like an amateur.
I've written to Tech Support about the problem and hope they may offer some useful advice, though from what I can see, there seem to be an awful lot of others unfortunately experiencing similar glitches.....

i just explained ....i have your exact laptop.....i have XP m.c.e. ........... i have made it work better than just ok.........
check out norway's setup guide at the top of the general discussion forum ..... do those things and you'll be all fixed......
changing your operating system is not going to fix it.......
getting an external hd is not going to fix it, but it's still an excellent idea

Media centre is a big NONO!!
I suggest upgrading to xp proffessional, but DO NOT get Vista otherwise you are in for even more trouble...
If your laptop is a DELL however, you can turf it in the bin :D
