A plugin cannot activate itself. It can't execute any code until it is selected or activated.

Well there must be another factor - selecting an effect can execute some code which is why I asked if the problem goes away if the effect is not selected in the effect browser, just enabled in the options as the visualisation.

the problem goes away when milkdrop is "removed" from all settings, otherwise it will cut in on its own accord (on two different installs)

So with milkdrop set as the visualisation, but not specified selected as an effect it will still cut in on it's own?
Sorry mate, completely unable to replicate anything like that - I've been using it in the scenario for some time.

Could it be some other plugin that Mark's using which is causing the problem?
Maybe you (SBDJ) can't replicate it because you don't have the exact same plugins.
