Why not just mp3gain your mp3 files as a regular procedure? I do this to all of my mp3 files before letting VDJ analyze them. Simple as that.

truthfully i do... but my partner doesnt....done fried my horns twice...i need that protection from him..and i know soon as 8 come out hes upgrading...tho i might the pc nerd he is not...he still oldschool wit this new school technology...so i figured if i could set the auto gain at 89 dont have to worry about his uneven files...he a good dj(song selection) but computer-wise he is not and i know theres alot of others like him...like he actually uses mp3skull(never me those mp3 are horrible)...its either put a limiter in my amp chain or use serato(not using serato VDJ is our money maker) just hoping this one feature would be implemented...and to be a step further 0db autogain was a mistake anyway..it should have been defaulted at 89 like every other program that does gain...but other than that...VDJ is the best program Hands down...on thing we use doing gigs from my serato is the interface...lol...i wasted 539.+tax..trying to be industry-standard..dont think i even got the latest update//lol....can i change it in the registry of VDJ7..can u tell me how...PLEASE....

When I first started using VDJ 6 years ago I always had problems with my levels but I was also using q cracked version and downloading my tracks from bit torrents. Not saying that's your problem but I've always used auto gain and never had a problem. Ok I shouldn't say never but rarely do I mess with the gain. I'm also using an external mixer, no controller, so I think that plays a role in it as well.
Make sure all tracks are analyzed first and you should never have a problem and even if someone gives you a track to play you always have time to analyz it first. And I would never run my tracks through MP3gain, I heard it brings every part of the track up. Some parts are supposed to be lower.
Good luck
Huey

I don't understand all the conversation around gain levels. You have auto gain and you have level controls on your mixer... what more do you need???

It seems that those of us that do not have this problem, subscribe to the same basic philosophy. Be prepared. I see that everyone here has offered plenty of remedies for this issue.

To add what I posted before it seems like everyone is taking way too much of a software dependent approach to mixing. I find auto gain does an excellent job of making sure songs have equal gain levels but if I'm mixing in a song and it's a little 'hot' I don't think to myself "hmmm, I need to find a way to change the track's gain level via third party software", I just adjust the upfader accordingly on the fly... it's called mixing.

Using somebody else's login and/or VirtualDJ serial is strictly prohibited, even if it is your brother. Please see http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Can%20I%20share%20my%20Serial%20Number.html

ok...before someone else makes it seem like i dont know what im doing....its more about distortion....most signal gain to 0db (no headroom) will cause distortion..basic audio knowledge reminds me that any signal in the red=distortion if im wrong enlighten me.... all im asking is leaving headroom in your autogain wouldnt be such a bad thing...this conversation doesn't get brought in other dj software forums because its already implemented, tell me one where its not implemented. Also i been djing since 1982 and the reason for djs of my age turn to software is to simplify what we do best...meaning the technology should make it easier...and if a simple thing like autogain that leave headroom is not only a great feature( as serato and traktor have figured out) but is also a protection feature...you never know for what reason you may have to quickly switch a track, even start it before its completely loaded...from a vinyl dj point of view waiting tfor track to load might not happen all the time...my software helps me carry 50000 tracks...even help garbage djs be able to mix when they no they cant why not help me protect my jbls againt overload ....but guess im wrong...and wont mention it anymore since it make me seem like a 2yr old dj....

Look, just download the Home version and scan all your files (and when you add new ones) so they are PRE-Analyzed.
That way you don't have the gain issues. Then you will be fine. You can even use the Home version to set cue points, make comments if needed, etc. etc. Think of the VirtualDJ Home Edition like using Serato in Off-line mode.

Look at my icons..I got my hercules before VDJ Pro/full. I questioned the same thing. Sound distortion everytime I turned knobs like gains,bass,mid,trebble..I still decided go PRO and WALAH. Best move I ever did!!

The scan won't make it work better if the sound of the file is bad(ie live concert ..)
The headroom -3 to -6dB will give you a sound clear that you can amplify with your external mixer that will do the job better than VDJ or any othe soft

When you all suggest to analyze your music, are you talking to highlight all the files in VDJ and click "analyze", or are you talking on a different program?
I have been using auto gain + remember for about a year now. Every time I start to mix 2 songs, I have to adjust the previously loaded ones gains every time to match them right. 95% of the time all my songs are not at the same gains, even though VDJ adjusts the gains to 0.0db when I load them.

-3dB from full scale would seem like a nice option to have on the individual track autogains.
