You've got balls kid..hehe, I've never liked making speeches infront of any amount of people..

I think the objective of your speech should be "What it takes to be a good DJ", as anyone can be a DJ, anyone with an ipod these days, so rather than promoting DJ'ing, perhaps explain the essence of what it takes to excel, how do you seperate your local DJ from a talented DJ? How would you read a crowd?

All DJ's are paid to serve, not to have a self love fest, few DJ's get paid a lot of money to play what they like..

I do motivational talks and I have too agree with Bagpuss on this one. I have a gentleman going be interviewing me this weak on DJing which is going to be similar to your topic. I talk a little about what got me interested in this business but will end the conversation on what it takes to be a standout and also the pros and cons of being a wedding, club, private DJ.

Then how do you handle the situation when you NEED to speak as a DJ? Public speaking is part of the job, even if its only to anoun ce the upcoming drinks specials.

Most all DJs followed their own path to become one. Some started with bands, others just wanted to get laid. Still others felt the need to share "their" music with the world at large. Good luck on your speech! Relax, take a deep breath before you begin speaking. Always remember to breath and keep your eyes moving around the room. There is nothing to be intimidated about everyone looking at you eats, sleeps, and drinks just like you do. So have fun with it.

I don't buy into that American style commercialism, personally, I don't feel that it's needed for a DJ to announce drink prices just as a Jazz band wouldn't, I entertain through the medium of music, it's a service, why would club goers pay me for me to sell to them? it's a bit like your typical "trendy" magazine, you pay several dollors/pounds for it, but on every other page it has adverts, the consumer doesn't always complain but when asked they prefer a magazine with less or no adverts ideally.

But anyway, not to divert from the topic.

All right well my speech should focus on 2 main points or more so one of them should be how to read the crowd what s another one?

Preperation..

Preparation ? be specific this is a big part of my class grade

How a good DJ prepares for the job. Whether its a wedding or a night in the club, a good DJ sees more to the job than just selecting songs and hitting on the chics. A good DJ prepares, they get a list of songs together, or have an idea in their heads at the bare minimum.

For mobile jobs they have to make sure the equipment is working and clean. And in my case meet with the customers at least once before the job and have them fill out the proper music forms.

In Clubs they should show up a few minutes early and inspect the equipment and make sure the dance floor is clean of debris. We wouldn't want anyone slipping would we?

That type of thing, use your imagination. This is your speech, not mine.... ;-)

I actually do this for a living, make presentations and lead people that make presentations. I'm not going to write your speech for you but here's a few thoughts. You've already got some good advice in some of the posts. Here's my post to complement those that have already graciously responded. Topic points:

Why you became interested - move on to the role of the DJ in a club/wedding - next the impact it has the experience for the customer (i would ask questions to the audience at this point ,you'll get responses for sure, and make the "speech" not a speech, nobody likes them, dialogue on a topic....interesting) - finally the commitment, THE COMMITTMENT.....and the steps it takes to be world class/make a living. I'm sure there are a few more. Don't just talk to the audience, let then interact wherever you can. You have to do the research now. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck.

if you are nervous before the presentation..do what the REAPER(ME)do .....jus look at the hottest chick ..if you are a guy..or the hotest guy(if ur a chick)..and keep on staring and deliver ur presentation...i did that ...works better than imagining pplz in their underwear..LOL.and about the speech..talk about the LOVE of sharing music with the world..etc......and dont forget...wear protection KIDS>>>>>>dj's get laid like crazy..lOOol....
