It doesn't feel roight because you weren't born in the 50's perhaps. You get 'em started with anything that seems fast, the requests will poor in. I go thru this all the time that way in hundreds of different places.

What i normally do is visit various websites, like HMV etc, then search for Album compilations. In your case search for 70's and then 80's, then review the tracks listed on the albums you find.

Yeh, best thing to do is listen to your 70s and 80s music collection as much as possible between now and the gig (either just open virtual dj, or use itunes or whatever). Then you'll start to get an idea of what's a party tune, which songs are rock ones, and which are disco ones, etc. That way you'll be able to work from the requests once you've got a few and you should be able to know what's going to go down well.

Here's a start, I'm in the UK by the way. Alot of these were international hits, but there might be a few which were only big in the UK.

Disco;
ABBA- Dancing Queen (100bpm) / Waterloo (145?bpm) /Take A Chance On Me/ Pretty Much anything by ABBA
Nolans- I'm In The Mood For Dancing (104bpm)
Jacksons- Blame It On The Boogie (114bpm) / I Want You Back (98 bpm) / Feel It (120? bpm)
Candi Staton- Young Hearts Run Free (117 bpm)
Barry White- You're My First, My Last, My Everything (130 bpm)
Trammps- Disco Inferno (130 bpm)
Earth, Wind & Fire - Boogie Wonderland / September
Kool & The Gang- Celebration
KC & The Sunshine Band- That's The Way I Like it / Give It Up (80s tune though)

80s Party Tunes:
Michael Jackson- Billie Jean (116 bpm) (The Way You Make Me Feel, Thriller, Bad, etc, etc)
Whitney Houston- I Wanna Dance With Somebody (118 bpm)
Tiffany- I Think We're Alone Now (130bpm)
Madonna- Material Girl (130 bpm)/ Like A Virgin/ Into The Groove / Holiday/ Anything
B52s- Love Shack (135 bpm)
Weather Girls- It's Raining Men (135 bpm)
Wham- Wake Me Up Before You Go Go / Club Tropicana

After Wake Me Up Before you Go Go- I might do some more seventies, maybe greased lightening then YMCA if the party likes it cheesey!

That's a start anyway. Actually I think you could play that whole list in order and it would sound alright, I've thought about tunes I often play and in what order. So often the bpms are similar for mixing, etc. Best to pick and choose though on the night depending on what's going down well.

My Best advice would be don't rush it. It's easy to arrive at the start of the night, get worried that people might not dance, play all your best tunes then wonder why nobody's dancing. When actually they're probably not dancing because it's only the start of the night. You should be able to tell when people are ready to get onto the dancefloor (after they've chatted to their mates, had a few drinks, etc)

At that point I'd stick on ABBA or Blame It on the boogie (if I thought it would go down well) or a few really good ones you're sure people will like. Then hopefully people will start to get on the dancefloor and it'll be easy from then onwards!

Hope that helps.

:)

No sense adding any other tunes. Just follow the lists already posted and
you can't go wrong.
If people want to hear something special they will make a request.

That was just the 70-80's part of a list I have that came out around 2000 from a dj mag that poled readers and came up with a list of the top 200 party songs ever.

If you look on the internet for "top 100 songs of" any year, you'll find it.

About 4 years ago I found a site that had the top 100 songs from every year back from 2002 all the way back to 1955. I copied most and made a word doc of each, so if someone calls me about a reunion for 1987 I can show them a top 100 list from that year. It will usually seal the deal for me right on the spot.

Good Luck with your party!
