Hi,

I sometines play Latin music at my gigs, but the actual kind of latin music I play is different, depending of what the customers of hat place think latin music is. I mean, for some it is "latin disco" for others is latin pop, like shakira, ricky martin, and for others is the real latin rythms which you talked about: salsa, merengue, reggaeton, bachata, cumbia, etc, etc.

One way you could find about some latin hits its by searching on google for "top latin hits" for example. but I can tell you about some of my favourites, wich everyone dances at when I play those songs:

Pachanga - loco
juanes - la camisa negra
J lo - lets get loud
kaoma - bantu

and of course Shakira :)

good luck in your latin parties

First off - I don't know why you took the gig if you don't have or even know how to play latin music.

There are many types of latin music and better know what style they are looking for.

cumbia
marengue
ranchera
salsa
tropical
bachata
just to name a few.

Playing the wrong style can insult the host and guest

Notice reggeaton in not on the list. That's because the style is not a traditional style so normally the younger people will request this style.

O also play latin music at many of my gigs. You do need to find out who your audience is going to be and what they mean by latin music. This could be anything from Brazilian samba to Colombian cumbia music! The range of music is huge! Once you know who your audience is you can narrow it down. For example my latino crowds are generally from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. They generally like reggaeton, merengue, bachata and salsa. Nothing else! It would be a mistake to try to play any other types of latin music to them. (Trust me I tried!). The younger latinos like to have a few American r&b and hiphop songs mixed in. I think that you will be ok with the styles mentioned above. You can try to get some compilation or greatest hits cd's to get you started. Believe it or not my local Walmart has enough latin music to help me do a gig. Usually you only get to play 60 or so songs anyway. You can also visit a local latino music store if there is one and they can give you some tips on what is selling ....

Because he lives in Jamaica, I stayed with Merengues and Salsas. I just don't see a big request for Tex-Mex or Rancheras. It's always good to have a Samba or two. You will have to decide if this is gonna be a long term thing, and make the necessary investment.

Ask them what type of music they would like to hear. 90 % of my gigs are latin parties. The music that i mostly play for them would be Merengue, salsa, bachata, reggaeton, some hip hop, reggae and some classics. Latino parties are very good because you can play a larger variety of songs. For merengue, get good songs from artist like " tono rosario " Hermanos rosario and La banda Gorda. For salsa, you need songs from artist like Joe arroyo- El gran combo- Oscar de leon- Grupo Niche- Fruko. For bachata get song from artist like Aventura- Luis vargas- Zcara ferreira- Anthony santos-Joe veras. I hope these artist names help.

Ok homie some advice!! KNOW WHO YOU ARE PLAYING FOR! This is crucial, Latin music can be very confusing, specially for those who are not familiar with latin music. Example, Dominican merengue (la banda gorda, oro solido, fulanito) and puertorican merengue (elvis crespo, karis, grupo heavy) are two completely different sounds, Cuban salsa, puretorican, and colombian, are different as well, argentine and colombian cumbias, same thing.
And generally latinos we want to hear stuff from our own background. So know who you are catering to, let us know so we can help further.

Some general latin tracks enjoyed by most.

Merengue -Mala Fe - A Quien Le Importa
Merengue - Karadura - Sexy Lady
Merengue - Ricky Castro - Mentirosa
Merengue - Amarfis - Casado Pero No Capado

Bachata - Alex Bello - Sin Ti
Bachata - Monchy & Alexandra - No Es Una Novela
Bachata- Domonicanada - My All
Bachata - Aventura - Corazoncito

Salsa - Tony Dize - Quizas
Salsa - Son De Cali - Son De Cali
Salsa - N'Klave - I Love Salsa
Salsa - Gilberto Santarrosa & Don Omar - Los Hombres Tienen La Culpa

Cumbia - Altos Cumbieros - La Ventanita
Cumbia - Rafaga - Mentirosa
Cumbia - Laura Leon & Azul Azul - El Hombre Es Como Un Oso
Cumbia - Kumbia Allstarz - Chiquilla

Once again give us more detail on who you are playing for and we will be able to help you further.

As to who i am playing for... that is a tough one

I assume that the crowd will change..... on a regular basis.. since most are tourists and probably stay two to three weeks the most.

Most of the visitors are Italians (seem to me that they prefer.. the Salsa sort of thing)
They are not really into Reggaeton.....

The crowd seems to be............. age 35 upwards....

will find out what type of latino music they like

the other problem... i will have is sourcing these songs.....

Any idea????

So this is for a club setting? My advise is to build a library from the list provided to you here. This what I do as well. I have an assortment of latin music and when people ask me to play a certain style of music I do ask questions before I play.

What region.
What style

If they can't answer, then I play a more general style that's at least danceable.

The more advance dancers should be able to tell you more detail. So going back to the original question is this for a club setting?

Just get lots of latin music and separate into the Genres.
Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton, Cumbia, Vallenato, Punta, Ranchera, Tex-Mex, Quebradita, Duranguense.

Last 4 are mainly for Mexicans.

Most Clubs in the US that play latin music concentrate on merengue, salsa, bachata, reggaeton, and cumbia.

So with that in mind here are some artist to look for:

Merengue\ Dominicans
Oro Solido
Julian Oro Duro
Kalimete
Amarfis
Fernandito Villalona
Omega
Hector Acosta "Torito"
Juan Luis Guerra
Sergio Vargas
Eddy Herrera

Merengue\ Puerto Ricans
Grupo Mania
Elvis Crespo
Olga Tanon
Joseph Fonseca
Grupo Fuego
Limite 21

Bachata
Aventura
Monchy y Alexandra
Dominic Marte
Optimo
Toby Love
Frank Reyes
Hector Acosta "Torito"
Joe Veras

Salsa
NKlabe
Victor Manuelle
Gran Combo De Puerto Rico
Marc Anthony
Gilberto Santa Rosa
Sonora Carruseles
Joe Arroyo
Fruko y sus Tesos
Celia Cruz
Grupo Niche
La 33

Reggaeton
Daddy Yankee
Wisin y Yandel
Don Omar
Rakim y Ken Y
Calle 13
Voltio
Hector "El Father"
Tito "El Bambino"
Yomo

Cumbia
Kumbia All Starz
Grupo Niche
Selena
Sonoro Dinamita

If you get some music from these artist you most likely will survive. If what they are looking for is tropical latin music.

no... it is not a club setting

its a sort of open air..... bar type restaurant style setting........ mainly where people will come in have a few drinks. etc... hang out

Of course there is a sort of dance area......
I think more than likely it is just to create for the tourist the back home sort of feel.
