What would be the ultimate laptop setup-configuration for mixing videos.
Is it nVidia 8600 graphic or ATI?
Can someone, please recommend me the ultimate laptop for video mixing?

I don't use video but people here are saying that ATI cards are better on laptops for video use.
 
Is anyone using a laptop to mix video professionally in a clubs?
If do so, please advise me or/and state your laptop configuration.

i do

i use a asus
a8js
dual core t5600
2gb ram
nvidia geforce 7700 512mb dedicated

external harddrive for the music videos
mainly promo only

i play at least 3 nights a week
6 ~ 8 hours each
plus events and parties etc...

i've been playing with this laptop for over 6 months now
and almost never had a problem
it took me a while to configure it in the beginning, but after that...

Nvidia Quadro 1500M 512MB dedicated
Videos stored on a separate partition on the internal HD (all promo only rips)
Hercules MK2 controller for sound & mixing


I work 3-5 nights a week.... 6-10 hours a day. Runs well overall. No audio pops or video stuttering.

I get an occasional blue screen once every month or two though. But I am pretty sure its related to my crappy Sprint aircard I use for internet access. I would probably be problem free if I didnt use it. :-)


 
I am planning on switching out from a relative weak tower to a pretty powerful laptop (specs below). You mention config issues with the software, could you give some hints as to what the story was? Also, to any and all - this laptop with the following specs should be able to handle videos (mpeg), correct? The tower fried the video card and then freezes on loading video now.

Any reponse would be greatly appreciated,

O/S - Windows Vista Premium
Processor Core2 Duo
Memory - 2048 MB
Memory Speed - PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM
Graphics - Nvdidia GeForce 8700M GT
256MB DDR3 discrete memory, up to 255MB dynamic allocation (total shared - 767MB)
 


That spec is great n should be no problem in handling video
 
WOW! Amazing, just amazing. One guy states "ALMOST never had a problem", and "took him a LONG time to tweak", as well.

AND..

..."A blue screen once in a while"..
...And these are comments from the top of the line computers...
..totally unsatisfactory remarks from the high end group techies

...developers, can't you see where the reliability is heading..down....

Bryant all the guy wanted was ideas. Now I think it is great that these users are being honest and stating the problems as well as how well they work. If you dont have something nice to say or somethin to add to the topic please remain quiet. I too am lookin for a new lappy and am interested in the pros and cons to systems users are usin.
 
Shoop, looks like there is still not out there a ultimate laptop that can push video flawlessly.

And I heard there are issues with nVidia 8600 video card.

I was thinking about Asus F8 with Ati HD2600 could solve that debate.
But we''l see, when it comes out, since F8 is still just announced.
 
The Ati HD series aren't really an upgrade from the previous generation (so far) other than they boast DirectX 10 support. This is the same story with Nvidia. The desktop cards however do have a performance increase.

In general, Ati do handle video better than Nvidia and offer better image quality. Performance wise, if you're doing cad work or gaming you want to go nvidia. If you're system is for video mixing with VDJ you definitely want to go Ati. Their Vista driver support is more stable compared to Nvidia too and norway as well as a few other members have mentioned how much better video works in Vista.

Bluescreens are not likely to be caused by VirtualDJ itself, but more likely a driver error/conflict. There are lots of posts on these boards about BSOD (blue screens of death), just a few days ago cstoll and myself helped someone go through their event logs and diagnose the problem not with being VirtualDJ, but that persons Sierra wireless card.
 
Since you can easily change Video card on the desktop, I recommend desktop PC for video use. It is bigger, I know, but you will have better and faster machine for less money ;)
 
Plus when you get up to like 6 HDs you have the room to add more HDs if needed.

I know it would be easier to get bigger drives, but you gotta do what you gotta do. My system is in a full tower ( server case) Freakin huge, but I got all the room in the world.
 
Get a cube PC - it's cheap, you can load it up, and it's small.
 
I already own a PC. And it's a real pain in the ass going from gig to gig and connecting all the cables to set it up.
I really need a laptop to stay mobile.
So please, stop sayin that PC is a better solution. We all already know that.
U can't expect me to get on the plane with a pc, right?
We're discussing laptops here, so stay on the topic please;-)

A cube PC is not a "Home PC" it is like a laptop with PC reliability. A tiny bit larger than a laptop w/o all those cables u speak of!
