I have been evaluating 4.2r1, going through various portions of it to determine if I will purchase it.
I have run across several items that will cause me to decide against purchasing should they not get fixed.
1. The list (database, virtual folders, etc.) does not get updated with artist/title when a scan of a track is done, it takes shutting down VDJ and restarting it to show the changes (should they take at all, another problem). This seems to be something that should work since the BPM, Time and Comment do get updated.
2. Sorting is very bad, clicking the column header to sort causes a sort, but not only is the sort itself coming up not in order, but the data being presented gets messed up more often than not.
3. The XML file is not standard, it doesn't have the regular XML header, and not all characters, especially international characters such as á, é, etc. get escaped like &apos and & do, and this tends to cause problems with a lot of XML editors, including XML Notepad
4. Scanned songs get written to the XML file multiple times in some cases. I haven't yet figured out the specific type of song or tag that causes this behavior, but I'll get tags where the <display will only have the tagread="1", others with the proper <display and others without any <display tag.
5. <Song tags seem to migrate from place to place between subsequent startups of VDJ. Aparently the XML file is updated only on VDJ shutdown. Should VDJ crash (and it has once so far), any changes are lost. The XML database should be updated as changes are made. Doing so should have little to no hit on performance.
6. After running awhile (scanning files, but not playing music), VDJ will suddenly begin to put out static on both channels, to both sound devices. I haven't determined if the time is the same each incidence or not.
7. Sort order doesn't appear to be properly maintained between sessions. There should be a sorting preference where more than one field can be selected.
8. On the current playlist, there should be an option to show BPM, possibly allowing a sort on this field for an initial setup of a set. This would make it a lot easier than looking back and forth to find the BPM to determine where a song should go in the playlist (right side list).
All I can think of at the moment, might have more coming later.
System specs: P4 HT, 3ghz, 2gig memory, ATI AIW Radeon 9600 (21" and 17" monitors) , 977gig of hard drive space (465 gig is external drive), SB Audigy II, Turtle Beach Amigo USB sound.

That's why there is a keyboard shortcut (or a button on the skin) to save the database when you want (when VirtualDJ is open).

You can define in the registry which column you want to sort when you open VirtualDJ (+autosort)
[See my registry tool in the plugins section]

Of course you would need to buy the software and register it in order to be able to utilize these options, or so I have been told ;>)

6) My 4.2 version of VDJ had the static problem after about 4 hours. Since upgrading to 4.3 this bug seems to have been fixed.
Just out of interest, why isn't the trial download the latest version?

Ok, found the registry tool. No documentation for it, so pretty much have to guess what does what.
Checked the keyboard shortcuts, maybe 4.3 has one for saving the database, but 4.2r1 doesn't, at least not in the default set. If there's a function that can be added, sure would be nice to know what it is.

It's the function "savedatabase" and it exists in 4.2r1
In Registry Tool, for Autosort option, set the value corresponding to the column to sort in the browser
(1: for the first one, 2: for the second one, ....)
You can modify the option ColumnOrder if you prefer too

Yes set the value "3" for the option "Autosort" in the registry tool but it starts with low bpm so as advised above, you need to click on the bpm column

Sort order suggestion, how about using a negative value with the column number to designate reverse order?

Ok, used the registry tool, changed the number and relaunched VDJ, and no sort occured in the virtual folders. The local database is empty since I've had problems with it, so didn't check to see if the sorting was working there or not.
I checked the registry, and the number was changed there.
Also, added files to the local database, and added a keyboard shortcut to save it.
When I pressed the shortcut, it said it was saving it, but when I opened it with the notepad, nothing was in the mp3database.txt file. Is it supposed to save only the <song tags into the VirtualDJ Database (user).xml file, and not into the mp3database,txt file?

I know that if I click on the bpm column it will sort the bpm but I was hoping there was a way to set autosort to start whith higher bpm so I don't have to use the mouse. I want to use my dac3 and the keyboard for searching. Thanks anyway.

The browser sort should remember it's sort order while in the same session also. Currently when I am sorted by a column and I click away from the browser or search, when I go back to the file browser, it forgets how it was sorted and goes back to the default.
