Topic: Sonique Video Effects Causing Computer to Freeze

Hello,

I am having a lot of problems with 4.2 working my my HP laptop with videos and the sonique video effects. I will be playing a music video and then a mp3 song and the sonique effect won't engage or if I try to manually engage it (have it set in options to automatically switch) the program will lock up. But it does not do this all the time, sometimes it works great.

I am running a fast computer (only running VDJ and NOTHING ELSE) with 2 gigs or ram, dual core processor and a 512 mb video card, so I don't think it is the computer, although my Toshiha laptop runs it much better and fails a lot less under the same conditions.

I am using VDJ 4 nights a week, throught 30 or so TV, and a really nice spot so when it crashes, almost every night, I have to be perpared to have a DVD ready to go so I don't look unprofessional.

Any help, or tips to get my machine working more reliable , please let me know!

Thanks,

Wyatt

Hiya,

Sounds odd, I know some visuals take up more processor power than others, perhaps it could be only happening when some visuals are active?

The easiest way to test this i guess would be to just enable a simple visual (no slideshow) like "spectragrid" and test it to see if it locks up or not.

If it doesn't, then you could go through all the sonique plugins and delete any with high cpu usage.

Just a though, hopefully some of the others will have some other ideas as to what it might be.

Oh, also, have you got the latest download of directx (dated feb 07), sometimes having older versions can mess things up a bit.

Good luck :)

I'll try the new direct x, I'm not sure does anyone else have problems with HP laptops?

I have a very strong system I use - btw NOT DUAL CORE - and there are some of the sonique visuals that I don't use (have deleted) because they are resource hogs. I highly recommend you use a skin with the CPU meter on it and watch for which ones peg the CPU and get rid of them.

I have too noticed this, but I think it started after the latest Direct X update cause I never had issues before this update.

Yes i noticed some strange behaviors on my video drivers since the last 2 directX version (december 2006 and february 2007)

ok so do you have the older version saved?? I don't think you are able to go back without a new install of XP cause I think Direct X will say the newest version is already there. I know I want to go back at least to the Dec one.

So, the best directx is october's?

If all is workin why change. I also had problems with the newest ATI drivers so I went back. Now whether or not it is related to the Direct I dunno, I am going to look and see if I have a restore point before the files were saved on my system or I am gonna re-install XP.

Here we go again, must be system related???

Test WHAT Sonique effect cases this.
We have removed already quite a few, as some Sonique effects dont work with VDJ, and can cause problems like described.

When DirectX gets a big update, things might change, that make a new sonique act bad. So might be related

I ran last night 4 hours with my second monitor on 16bit and I swear with just VOBS my resources were at like 19% while playing and like 45% while loading while one was playing. Certain Soniques were causein me to run at like 80% while no video was playing. I am really gonna have to look into which ones are causin problems. I can tell you that I am runnin smoother with the second screen on 16 instead of 32. Right now I am planning on a dual XP install in the near future as I feel I want to run just VDJ on one without the OS kicking in.

16 bit will run A LOT smoother on "slower" pcs.. So that is a good tweak ;)

yeah, certain Sonique plugins arent well written, and eats a lot of CPU
And some even crash (Tried removing all, but since DirectX is updated, new problem plugins might arise)

Well I wouldn't consider my pc as slower. It is an Athlon 64, MOBO A8N5X Asus, 2 gig Ram, ATI X1950 pro 256 DDR3. I just couldnt believe the difference and the quality wasnt bad either. I thought I would lose quality on the video, but it isn't noticible.
What about Slideshows?? I have never used them in VDJ, but I think I want to start.

Slideshows run super smooth on my laptop even, with ATIX700 card.
Seems to use little cpu.

Its a damn nice feature, if used creativly. I make different slides in Photoshop, that the plugin runs after eachother, and it gives a nice effect..

Like
" EVERBODY "
" DANCE "
" NOW"

on 3 slides, with black background and a nice font and color on the text.

Stuff like that ;)

Lots you can do :)
