Guys
I posted a couple of months ago about how I was buying a business. Well, next week, it all goes ahead...:o) Can't wait!!! Anyway, I've just been given like 40 gigs from existing business to cover the next couple of months, alot of which are weddings.
Thing is though, I've only ever done two weddings. 1 was a disaster cos i didn't have enough punk rock music (don't ask) and the other was a gay wedding during the week and therefore pretty quiet, but at the same time a good night.
Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions for the perfect wedding playlist? I know about all the regular party stuff, and I wouldn't be going into anything too heavy, but just the good old classic songs that should be played at weddings.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers...and keep spinnin'...(",)

Hi Pionara,
Not sure how it is up in Scotland (just checked ur blog!), but in england a few of my wedding favourites are:
Four Seasons- Oh What A Night
Nolans- I'm In The Mood For Dancing
Jacksons- Blame It On The Boogie
Barry White- My First My Last My Everything
Billie Ocean- Love Really Hurts Without You
But obviously, every wedding is different, if there's a larger proportion of younger people, more newer music would be more appropriate.

Oh, and if you're using the same setup as in your blog, a nice black table cloth might give it that extra professional touch for a wedding! :)

someone has started a topic on this already over in the music discussion section:

(might be better to have just one topic on the subject)

HI MATE
i've done loads of this sort of stuff before years ago and you can guarantee like most things their will be the shits who will come up & ask for stuff even limewire has'nt got, so heres a suggestion for you and anyone else that maybe stuck in this situation, why not if you have'nt done it already send out a standard joe blogs letter to each client introducing yourself & the company thanking them for their custom, confirming their name or in the case of weddings/engagements both parties, the venue/location, date, type of party, time your expected to be set up, time you are expected to start & more importantly finish time (cos if your asked to play over your set & you want to charge extra its all down as such in this little informal contract).hope i made sense there.
Right this next bit should be as a seperate piece of paper or two, in the case of weddings etc ask them if they have a favourite song they would like played just for them (saves egg on the face on the night & gives you time to go and hunt that little turd out) write out a coloum of favorite music that is played in your part of the world with two tick boxes as their preferred choice yes or no ie:-
reggae yes no
rock yes no
any other music/sounds/tunes you would like played (this bit near bottom for their selection)
get where i'm coming from and you can also do a copy for them to fill in for their guests, gets you out the shit if they get it wrong and finally thank them again for their custom and then ask them after they have filled this lot in to send it back to you in your pre-paid envelope so you can confirm everything above, long winded i know but it will show how professionall you are.
And remember take those bits of paper with you to the gig cos you never know why sometimes the shit hits the fan(if you like i could make up a draft for you and send it e-mail & then you could amend it to suit your particular requirements....enjoy

I personally am a fan of not reinventing the wheel - I found a great reference for wedding song choices: http://www.solidgoldsound.com/songbook.asp
I am not affiliated in any way with the company, but I don't mind stealing their work. I wouldn't distribute this to my clients at all, but I do sometimes use it as a guide when I am trying to think of a song to play...
Another great source is www.djintelligence.com - they've got a database of about 60,000 songs. I do use their service and I love it.
I've done literally thousands of weddings over the years. Every one is different, of course... but despite my best efforts to the contrary, somehow I still end up playing the F***king Electric Slide every time.
Have fun with your new company!

Thanks guys. Really helpful stuff.
Andytaylor...really like the idea of the black (or white i suppose) tablecloth. Adds a touch of class i think.
any more suggestions greatly welcomed...and I'll check out the sticky on the music forum.
Cheers...and keep spinnin'...(",)

i know i'm repeating this but again it's about weddings........only use fog at the wedding if the bride is really beastly.......at the reception be sure to check with the hall if it's ok
i hardly ever play "she's having my baby"
if it looks like a scene from "weddding crashers" yer doing a great job.......

I just had my first wedding last week and it went well. Just like it was mentioned above, send them a questionnaire asking about the type of music they want/like and/or list the different genres and ask them to rate it on some scale (1-5, 5 being best). It puts the onus on them, but you're not going to get a whole night's worth of songs from them. Just load up on songs that are similar to what they tell you they like. Have the classic wedding specialty dance songs on hand, for processional, recessional, father/bride, mother/groom, first dance, etc, in case they can't make up their mind about certain things.
My "couple" only chose a song for their first dance, their grand entrance and a song for when the groom removed the garter from his bride. I used "Love's Theme" by the Love Unlimited Orchestra for the wedding party's entrance at the reception. For the cake-cutting, I used "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers. He was Columbian and she was Cuban. I played salsa, merengue, vallenato, cumbia, as requested by them. I had about 6-8 CDs that the guests brought up to me, so I didn't have to do too much programming. Hispanics are a lively bunch (I'm Puerto Rican) and they didn't disappoint. They danced to EVERY CD that was given to me. It was an easy first wedding gig for me. If you want, I can send you a sample of the questionnaires that I used. Just send me a private message. Good luck.
