Thanks to Promo Only, who wrote a great article on VirtualDJ this month:

VirtualDJ (www.virtualdj.com)

Billing yourself as the easiest and most powerful VJ
software on the market might seem like bragging --
if it weren't true...

How easy is VirtualDJ to learn and operate? Equipped
with a revolutionary interface engine, the look and feel of
VirtualDJ adapts itself to YOUR level. Start with an easyto-
use skin (a custom graphical interface) to learn with,
then choose from the dozens of skins available, from the
simplest to the most complex, as your skills progress.

How powerful? VirtualDJ is today's only software to
provide a clear superimposed view of the music beats;
a synchronized sampler for intuitive live remixes; truly
fluid music video scratching (at any tempo); and is
compatible with ANY kind of video file: DVD, DivX, XviD,
MPEG1/2/4,AVI,WMV, MOV, and (preferably) VOB.
VirtualDJ also offers dozen of video transitions and
effects specifically designed for VJ use (eliminating the
need for a digital video mixer); and, for those who still
prefer some hardware in hand, interfaces easily with a
variety of external MIDI controllers, giving you the best
of both worlds -- the look and feel of conventional DJing
and the ease of digital performance.

The downside: At $299.00, there's nothing expensive
about VirtualDJ; add a MIDI controller (and you'll find
several to choose from on VirtualDJ's website), and you'll
still come in at just under $1k. BUT you will have to
install and integrate the software into your
computer, which is no small task for the
hyper-busy or tech-impaired. Find yourself a
mentor, or become familiar with sites like
ProDJ.com,VideoHelp.com or our own Club
Promo, where VJ help is just a click away, and
you'll find an investment in VirtualDJ ALL upside.

“Thanks to programs like VirtualDJ, the digital DJ
has a new image,” said Hodgkins.“No more 'He's
just using a laptop - anybody can do that.' We've
stashed the PC away and only show a monitor
with a remote keyboard or MIDI mixer on a
sliding shelf. You'd never know I'm using a PC by
the look of my gig box; but you will notice when I
pull a song you've requested up in 3 seconds or
less. Sure, it's more work to set up initially, but
you only get out of digital DJing what you put into
it. Once the work is done, it's easy to keep up
with and a pure joy to run and use. I get excited
every time I boot the thing up.”
