Topic: transfering Database

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

First here is the situation:

I am going to purchase VDJ ... I have been using a cracked version. I’m wanting to be able to fully use this forum, the downloads, effects, receive the updates, and of course version 4.0 I know its easy to ripp me for using the cracked version... however I’m here with a real concern.... I have already set up my database with cues, BPM, and comments... hours of work.

When I have the newly purchased version, would I be able to take a copy of the old database, and replace the new one with it? Id jump into a legit copy right now.. if I knew I wasn’t going to spend all of that time again, with BPM... cues... and comments.

Helpful advice would be great.

I hope to see you soon as a full license user!
Go to your VDJ folder and backup "VirtualDJ Database.xml" and your BPM's, Cues and comments are inside. When you buy VDJ, install it and put your database inside. That is all.

Thank you, I was hopeing that that would be the case. I have discovered that there is more value in becomeing a full licenced user of VDJ... the access to this forum... with out the GO BUY THE SOFTWARE responce... the access to efects, loops, and updates is what has really sold me on getting the softeare... I will be back as a full user....

Thanks, but could someone give me simple, step by step instructions for importing my database from V 1.2 into V3.4

I know where to find the database folder with the files, but don't know how to transfer the files, when I should delete the old files etc.

So if someone could provide instructions that say,

step 1 - do this...
step 2 - do that...

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

It's easy

1- Go to VDJ directory and delete (or move on another folder for backup) your "VirtualDJ Database.xml" file
2- Copy/paste your old datadase 1.2 in this directory
3- Reinstall VDJ

By default VDJ will convert your old database to the last version

Thanks, but I've already installed V3.4

Where do I find the database (with my comments) for V1.2?

If you had a legal 1.2 version of VDJ then when you installed the new version I think it went on top of the old version like an update, if not then do the following:

1. go to drive c:
2. go to program files
3. find VDJ 1.2 folder and click on it
4. usually at the bottom of all the files and folders there is a file called VDJ Database.xml
5. click once on it, then right click and copy
6. go to VDJ 3.4 folder and right click on it and paste the file.
7. that is it !!!

if you updated the VDJ 1.2 version for the VDJ 3.4 version...I'm sorry to tell you but you are doomed !!!.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the great advice.

Yes, I updated 1.2 for 3.4 so it looks like I'll have to recreate all my playlists and comments. :(

No worries - shite like this happens with technology. VDJ is still the best - I'm VERY happy with the products and the wonderful support groups here...

Onward & upward!!

Sirslick, I like your attitude. No crying, whining, or blaming others. You have accepted the way things are, and decided to move onward & upward. You have put a smile on my face. It will not be easy, but my hat is off to you. My peace be with you.

Sirslick,
to make sure it does not happen again that information is lost: Make a regular copy of your VDJ files (like vdj install file, skins, effects, database) to another pc or to cd.

Thanx Superstom and a Man & his Music!

Yeah, with me the glass is always half full. The simple truth is VDJ is an outstanding product and has made me a much, much better DJ. I consider this part of the learning curve that goes with any new piece of software...

Okay, what's the best way for me to back up my crucial files and which files do you recommend I backup regularly?

Sirslick

To my experience, the files you have to make a back up are the following:

1. VDJ Database.xml
2. Skin folder ( complete )
3. Sampler folder ( complete )
4. Effects Folder ( complete )

The first one is, as know already you, all the info of your music ( bpm, comments, time, author, names, etc ) the most important file for you.

the last three are just to make sure you don't have to dowload all the files again and again, remeber, VDJ by default only comes with 1 or 2 skins ( default ) and samples and effect are about 7 of them each. all the rest that you have downloaded will be probably lost everytime you upgrade.

And like the rest, nice attitude, hope everyone would be like that, including myself :-)

Regards

Welcome Sirslick, yes virtual dj is a program that make us better dj's for sure, and it has more positive points than negatives to keep us satisfied...

The most important files to keep is "VDJ Database.xml" and "shortcuts.xml" and your favorite(s) skin files. The others can easily recovered by setup or recreated if needed.
Also your serial number. You'll need this in every update.

I also recommend to burn the full versions an updates of the vdj software itself. Otherwise you will need to ask the team for another download if something happens with your machine.

Damn, I can't remember where I put my serial number. Guess that's what I will be doing tonight, lokking for my serial. Great suggestions about the backups.

Another tip:
Make a backup and store it somewhere else than your own house. Like at your parents, a friend or at work. If your house got on fire, or you got some thieves, looking for cds or computers, you still have your data on a separate location.
I bought a cd wallet where 208 cds / dvds could be stored and I keep it at my fathers house. Every couple of weeks I create some dvd's with software (like VDJ, VDJ upgrades, skins, effects, database etc), but also financial and insurance data, serial numbers of software etc.

I also keep Serial numbers and product numbers for all equipment I have (dj and non dj) at my house including pictures. Could be helpfull for the insurance company if I need it.

At first it looks like a pain, but wait until the moment you need it, while you dont have it...
