Does any one else have problems hearing the singnal thru the headphone socket on the console. It seem V. quite to me, or do I need to get my console repaired (hope not)

Yes. Can't get mine to work. Didn't feel like returning it. I use a USB monitoring source instead. Plantronics headset.

Don´t use the default skin which is shipped with the dj-console!
Me too i was a little bit confused as i realized that the default skin in VDJ was just pure scrap.
Luckily you can find real working skins for free!
Just download a skin from this website.
I like the black pioneer skin, because it seems to have reach features. i´ve tried no other skins right now , so try out ohter skins yourself.
Downloading additional effects requires a Serial-Key, which is not included with the dj-console.

I have tried your workaround, but it works only half.
When i changed to this skin, i was able to slide some headphone sliders. When is do.. the main audio output drops 1 channel!!! :-| so with 1.08 full, i'm forced to use an external Mixer to get headphone pfl output.
i hope this (with all the other bugs) is corrected in the next update.
