I’m trying to use a DDJ1000 as a VirtualDJ controller but use either my 2019 16” Intel MacBook Pro or my Allen & Heath SQ5 as my audio interface.
This used to work fine with older versions of VirtualDJ (I think.)
I’m on b9004 now and the left player was dark and the right player was lit up and working. I had to switch the left player to 3 instead of 1 when I used to be able to use 1 and 2, the center faders in the DDJ1000.
Now I’m so confused after dealing for hours with the VirtualDJ manual on the DDJ1000 (which doesn’t really go into detail on this sort of thing and appears to be a few years old) and chatGPT and Gemini and Claude, all of which are telling me to change settings for decks and line_in, etc which don’t appear to exist anymore.
Do I need to get a different controller? Or maybe revert to an older version of VirtualDJ?
Thanks.

VirtualDJ works fine for me on both my M1 and M4Pro MacBook Pro with the latest EA release (b9209 at the time of this writing).
The problem with if a controller would work is most likely never going to be VirtualDJ...unlike other platforms (coughs Serato coughs) they don't actively deprecate controller support.
The determining factor is driver support for your OS version. As long as you can find a working driver for your controller on your OS at the version level it's at, it should work with VirtualDJ.

Common... now.. really ?
The display clearly says "External input"
This means that the source switcher for that deck is set to line input.
Flip it to USB A (or USB B, if you have connected your USB cable there)
https://www.virtualdj.com/manuals/hardware/pioneer/ddj1000/layout/mixer.html#mixer
Item NR 11
Source switcer! :)
Do it for all decks actually.. :P
Plus the deck on screen shows the same thing. MUTE (because the software mutes the deck output) and LINE IN (to show you that you have selected to route analog audio via the LINE INPUT on that deck.! :)

As @PhantomDeejay said, you have the deck source selectors on the left hand side (1 and 3) set to the wrong source. Set it to the correct usb side that you have the computer connected to (A or B).

Thanks.
I turned all 4 to USB A and the left player works on 3 and the right player is 2 so I can’t use the center two faders. Not a huge deal but also the. Yellow cue button doesn’t light up on 3 for the left player and there is no volume light flashing for channel 3.
I’m sorry I sound like such a noob. I haven’t used a controller for 5 years probably and with the older versions of VDJ this controller didn’t have any issues.

Short video showing left deck functioning but not fully. I think it is a hardware issue. If I unplug the computer and reboot the DDJ1000 it doesn’t light up channel 3. I’ve only used this thing a few times. Bummer.

Based on the scenarios you've provided and my personal knowledge/ownership/use of the controller, there is nothing wrong with the mapping of the controller for those cases (for example, a cue button wouldn't light up unless you press it, and turning all four sources to usb A means the computer connected to usb A has full controll of all four decks from the controller, with the default 3124 channel layout).
Take time to learn the functionality of the controller and how to use it. @PhantomDeejay provided you with the manual - read through it from start to finish, and perhaps look at some YouTube videos on its features and how to use it.

Thanks. I’ll try and figure out if there is a way to get the left player to use channel 1 instead of channel 3.
I think channel 3 has a burned out or loose LED cable. Even at boot up with no computer connected channel 3 doesn’t light up like the others.
