I was at a venue and never really used CDJs. When I connected my laptop to the mixer DJM-9 it worked fine but I couldn't control either CDJ I don't want to have to connect each CDJ to my lap top is there a setting I'm missing I have the drivers all downloaded. Basically I want to just plug into the mixer and play like with turntables or a controller.

The venue probably expects you to use the setup in standalone mode.

If you want the CDJs to control Virtual DJ, the you have to connect the CDJs to you laptop and run them in HID mode.

You could probably play a timecode signal in the CDJs, but you wont have much control of VDJ then.

It is possible but only with the DJM-900NXS2 and the DJM-V10

Otherwise you indeed need to connect both the mixer and the cdj's separately with usb.

If you regularly dj there, you can of course get a usb-hub and connect cdj's and mixer to the hub. Then when you arrive you just need to connect the hub's cable to your computer.
The DJM-S11 has a usb-hub built in for that purpose.
