I have read this thread on how to draw my own play head on top of the original white one.
https://www.virtualdj.com/forums/214218/Wishes_and_new_features/PlayHead_custom_color_option.html?page=1
I would like some help understanding the thread so I can make it myself.
How do I put the element in properly and how do I change color?
I am using default skin/ performance.
Thank you

These are always more of a pain to explain rather than do
the line is a
<overlay>
it's part of several wave types, starting at 2106
easy thing is, it uses a unique colour called "needle"
so you could just edit the colour at 191 [for standard colour scheme]

Oh I thought the play head was the line that tells the position in the song_pos waveform. That's the one I want to change.

You can't change the playhead color (actually it's more of a shadow)
You can turn it of though via settings.
You can also overlay a custom slider with songpos as action in order to use any kind of graphic as playhead. However if you don't turn off native playhead you'll see that the custom one may have some pixels offset from time to time (rounding issues). So be sure to turn native off in that case.

By native playhead you mean skinPlayheadShadow in settings? This is turned off. Ok, so I guess I want to create my own overlay with songpos as action. How would that look like?
This was my first guess. It doesn't show up. But am I somewhat close? Where do I put the overlay?
<overlay action="song_pos">
<pos x="+0" y="+0"/>
<size width="401" height="173" />
<background color="green" shape="square" />

You need to use a slider element
