I am finding the tag showing when a song has been played , is not working , have I switched something off ?

2 things:
1. Check the "historyDelay" setting. Default is 45 seconds. After this time a track gets marked as played.
2. The chanels volume fader has to be up. If it is to low the track won't get marked as played.
