several years ago VDJ was associated with VENUE VJ and those files were in a .vix file format. these play fine with VDJ 7 but don't with 8... why?

Good question. The codec is listed as supported. I had forgotten about these tracks, as I only have 27. They still play in 7, but not 8.

If they are drm encrypted files and/or require a custom codec they will indeed no longer play in VirtualDJ 8.
If they just don't show up in the browser, you may try if you can load them by adding vix to the fileFormats advanced option.

They show in the browser, and the .vix is already in the file format, this is why I thought it was supported. So, whatever codec that was used in 7, to allow these tracks to play, has not been ported to 8, and you have no plans to do so?

At the moment there is indeed no plan to support these files in VDJ 8.
