A script to select custom button variations

Something like

custom_button 3 17

(button 3 variation 17)

you can do this, i have seen it done. I have a button that toggles between effects, loops and cues. It was in version 7 but I deleted it as I got a new controller,.
 
Hmm, perhaps but I think we're thinking differently.

Yes, I've seen that, What I'm after is switching the variations entirely via script, POI stuff
I know I could instead of have variations I could just have 100s of custom buttons (you can have as many as you want), but that's messy, I'd rather have a particular style of script on a button with several variations, then a POI query can pick, custom button 2 variation 6.
So button 2 is always related to, X effect or Y slider, but duration/strength/delta depends on the variation
