I connect my IDJ3 to my laptop (which, as far as i know, the controller is fully updated) and start the software but i can't control anything.
The sound is running through the soundcard fine and the mapper section picks up that it's plugged in, all the buttons are mappable etc. but i can't manipulate the software at all... any ideas?

Still very intermittent! I have plugged the controller in two different Computers. My Gig laptop and my Home desktop computer.
Same Results - buttons and sliders not working on the controller

If there is a detection issue, then most likely it wont work with version 7 either. I don't see anything on the default definition/mapper of the unit to lead to a miss-detection. However, the unit (along with other Numark devices e.g Mixtrack ) are well known of detection issues on several OS.
So, first please try with the latest available build (1774) and also see if the unit is detected and working fine with version 7 too.

1774.645 Unit is detected. Settings shows IDJ3 soundcard in Audio. Setting shows Keyboard and Numark IDJ3 (factory default) in Controllers.
The mixer always provides a signal (music) to amplifier and speakers.
The VDJ8 icon in the Windows taskbar has a pop up message saying "Numark IDJ3 - connected" when usb is removed and reinserted
VDJ 8 - buttons sliders and dials working Intermittent (can see a shadow slider sometimes. full colour slider jumps to a position when controller slider is moved, but then freezes
VDJ 7 - Working perfect, everytime

Please do the following.. ..
Open VirtualDJ and goto OPTIONS tab, make sure the "Show Advanced Options" is checked and search for the createMidilog setting.
Set it to Yes, and close VirtualDJ.
Make sure the IDJ3 unit is connected and launch VirtualDJ.
Close again and post the content of Log Report.txt file here(open it with Notepad)
Notes:
Normally, if the unit is connected when VirtualDJ launches, the faders (volume, pitch, EQ etc) should report their initial positions and the sliders on the screen/skin should take the positions of the actual sliders. The "ghost" faders may be visible e.g. if you press SYNC on a deck, so the pitch sliders of the software and the hardware dont match at that time. For any other faders, this can only happen if you use a 2 deck controller with a 4 deck skin.

Ok, try with build that end at .647 or later
It will now provide a special button in the AUDIO tab of CONFIG, which will create a Master/Headphones audio setup (need to click APPLY after that)
We also corrected the identifiers.. old device ..not sure why we had a different value.. anyways, try to reproduce again with the latest builds (end at.647)

Idj3 was not showing up in the sound card setup. Unplug Idj3, open VDJ8 open Settings, audio, Then plug in Idj3 wait for it to show up in Card setting and apply then save
