So I'm in the market for my first pair of Dj headphones. I have my eyes set on the Pioneer Hdj 2000, V-MODA Crossfade, and the Beats Mixr

I know that when you buy beats, you basically buy it for the brand. But I've read that they are pretty good, build quality and sound are excellent,

If anyone has any other suggestions (under $200, if you please), please let me know :D

What about the classics?

Technics RP-DH1200

Sennheiser HD 25 (any version you prefer)

They're both under 200€ too. Technics is even only about 100€!

I'll check out then technics.

I've read some reviews of the HD 25's, and quite honestly I'm a bit turned off about them. Yes they have good sound quality, but the over-ear style would get a bit painful when worn for a few hours. Any other recommendations?

I've had my HD25s for many years and they're not at all uncomfortable.

You also see them being used by TV presenters at sporting events by the BBC etc. and that wouldn't happen if they were uncomfortable.

I'm on my second pair of denon dnhp1000's and I'll prob never buy anything else. Tried a pair of the $200 beats and they sounded ok, but wouldnt play loud enough for me to use at a gig. Tried the pioneer 1000's and some of the sony's but they choke you and restrict your head movement when you wear them around your neck. The denons are good for about 3 years before the bands break, but they get dropped alot, so I dont mind replacing them. Good luck on ur search hope u find something u like.

Becareful if you buy the pioneers their are alot of fakes immintations floating around on the interwebs, from china. Would hate for you to overpay for a pair of knock offs.

Get the Numark Red Wave headphones. They're comfortable, nice fitting, beautiful design, crystal clear sound, and best of all, cheap. I highly recommend them.

I agree with DJ Zibs, got a pair of numark red wave for a birthday present recently, good sound and comfortable, dont buy expensive headphones for DJing, these do the job.

The Age Old 'What headphones' question.

1. Go to a store.
2. Take a well produced CD with you.
3. Listen to your CD on as many pairs as the store has in stock.

THEN you can make a decision. My amazing is your awful, and vice-versa.

With reference, though, to the uncomfortable HD25s, I'm only an enthusiast who appreciates nice-sounding sound, but after four hours constant wear, they're fine. Good for DJing, good for iPod, and anything else with a 3.5mm socket (really long cable notwithstanding).

They're loud, precise, and you can't hear anything of the outside world when both ears are covered. My only gripe is the forever-twisting cables, but that's easily rectified by pulling them apart, untwisting and slotting together (in the time it takes to load a track).

Oh, and parts are easily replaceable, should you bust 'em.

I have a pair of Citronic Ultima HP500Pro's (http://www.promobile.org.uk/viewarticle.php?id=125)

Key things for me:

1, They are loud
2, They are over ear
3. They are comfortable (long periods)
4. They have a detachable cord
5. They come with straight and coiled cords
6. Right-hand jack
7. 1/4" unscrews to reveal 3.5mm jack
8. The fold away nice and small
9. The cup can rotate for on head and off head use
10. Band if comfortable on a bald head (but that's just me...)
11. They sound great (plenty of lows and highs)
12. They are cheap! Only £40!

Been using them for 5 years and only on my second pair. I have dropped them countless times and even though the cord is detacheable I have never had to replace it. I'm still using the twisted cord off of my first pair, so still have the 2 twisted an 2 straight UNUSED!!

But I agree with what others have said above. Go and try pairs, see what works for you. I love the sound of these, but you may not.

Look at build quality, look at how you use, transport and store them. If they get chucked around, dropped or crammed in to a flight case/lead box then there's no point spending out a fortune on them as they'll be mistreated.

Also, if you can treat yourself to a DJ headphone bag. Keep them stored well and they will last longer. If like me you get asked to play at ther events or gigs, then it customary (well here in the UK at least) to bring your own phones.

My American Audio controller/laptop bag came with a separate headphone bag which attaches to the side. So I'm covered ;-)

Cheers,

Roy

I've had my HD25s for more than ten years and only ever changed one ear pad.

Really. 10 years. And you only use them for Djing?

I use HD25s. After 15 years I'm only on my second pair. Once had to replace the cable on the first pair after several years use. Mainly use them for DJing every weekend (and some recording at home)…………. and obviously very happy with them.

Try before you buy, make sure they're comfortable both when you're wearing them and around your neck, make sure the cups swivel (in both directions) should be fully enclosed ie over ear and not on ear

I have just bought a pair of the V-moda crossfade m-100 headphones, I have previously been using Technics rp-dj1200.

They are 2 quite different headphones, one is over ear and the other is on ear.

I have been using the Technics around 8 years and they have been fine, only changing the ear pads once.

The v-modas are a lot louder and much bassier. They don't sound great a low volume as the emphasised bass seems to muddy the midrange, but when you turn them up, to the levels you will need for djing they seem to really come to life and the sound balance seems to really work.

So my point is that it's worth finding somewhere you can test the headphones before you buy, as everyone's views are different.

I was happy with my Technics, but just wanted something newer and different. We will see if the v-modas are still going strong in 8 years, but to be honest I will probably have gone deaf using them before that.

Good luck with your search.

Vmoda's all the way. Just love the feel, the look, and the sound from the Vmoda's.

No, I use them any time I need headphones. Plane, hotel room, coffee shop, audio editing, remixing, production...

Numark redwaves are comfortable sound great and are cheap come with phono / mini phono adapter also detachable/ replaceable long cord.

Get the V-MODAs. I've been using cans to make money for over 30 years now. The V-MODA headphones are hands down the best cans I've ever used.

I've been using the audio-technica ath m50... decent build and very good sound for it's price range...
