What's the difference in EQ'ing and using the filter?

I thought the filter either cut the low's or the high's from a track, but if it was that simple you wouldn't need an effect plugin you could just map a knob to decrease highs or lows depending on which way it was turned.

I've read that the default vdj filter isn't that great so I downloaded and installed QB_filter, but it seems to result in a slight distortion in sound.

The reason for the distortion is that you have the resonance turned up. Essentially what it does is boost the frequency right before the cutoff. I made a picture to show you. Imagine that the curve in the blue line can move horizontally along the graph, but when moving it will always boost just before the cutoff

edit --------------

actually if you use VPS Philta you will see the relationship live as the plugin is working
