Can anyone tell me if I need a preamp to use a mic with my vms4.1. Tried with and with out and still not getting any sound.

The VMS 4.1 has two mic inputs on the front panel. These can be used for mics. Nothing else is needed.
Plug a mic in, turn up the mic volume, turn up the master volume. The sound comes out of the master outputs.

... and make sure you're using a dynamic mic. If your current mic is a condensor-mic it will need phantom power, something your VMS doesn't provide.

Good point! Also, make sure you're using a mic designed for DJs and/or singers, not a computer mic. Computer mics are not suited to DJ use.

Damn! I've been using a condenser, no wonder it wasn't working. Thanks for your help.

YW.
If you want to use that mic, you can add a external phantom power supply. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Seismic-Audio-SA-PPCM-Condenser-Microphones/dp/B00BL8VXWE/ref=sr_1_15/189-0330700-3916213?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1371740428&sr=1-15
