how do i take the beat off of the songs to just play vocals

Using a filter will only do so much and for the most part sounds like crap. If you want just vocals you need to find/download/buy an accapella version of the song. If you want a version that's without vocals you need to get the "instrumental" version.
A lot of hip-hop records have these.
