what exact hardware do i need to purchase to start with becoming a laptop dj?

The minimum you would need is an additional sound card to allow headphone monitoring/pre-listening.
Other hardware depends on your own personal preferences.
Most laptop DJ's add a MIDI controller to allow more hands-on mixing.
A good piece of hardware for starting with is the Hercules DJ Console RMX - It has everything you need:
* FREE limited DJ Console Edition of VirtualDJ
* Hardware controller for VirtualDJ
* Built-in DJ sound card (Allowing headphone pre-listening.)
* Allows you to upgrade in future to the full VirtualDJ Pro at a considerable discount.

Thanks for the help. would I need anything other than an MIDI controller and a soundcard usb?

If you are purchasing an all-in-one package such as Hercules DJ Console RMX, then you won't need anything else except for some music and a laptop of course.
If you are purchasing a MIDI controller that doesn't include software, you would also need VirtualDJ Professional: https://virtualdj.com/buy/
If you only intend to mix with keyboard and mouse, then VirtualDJ Basic https://virtualdj.com/products/basic.html or Home Edition https://virtualdj.com/products/homeedition.html would be suitable.
