Topic: CDJ400 + Bass = mp3 skipping?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi everyone,

I have a really interesting and annoying problem that I was wondering if anyone else had ever been exposed to it. Last night when working at one of my residencies i noticed that the music would pause and then start again, as if a CD was skipping. The setup is two CDJ 400's with a DJM 600 with the CDJ 400's both acting as remote controls and soundcards for Virtual DJ 6.0.2.

I turned the bass almost off and found that the problem didn't occur, but when i pushed the system harder, and consequently the bass went up as well, it cut in and out again, only on one deck though. I've heard of bass causing issues like this with play pause buttons before but only with loose rigs (the CDJ400's are brand new, I was the first to use them last night) and at events like Hardcore style raves etc, I was playing beer tunes, party favourites and country!

the crazyiest thing about it all was that the music would stop, my computer wouldnt freeze it would be behaving normally, and then after about 1 second the music cut back in again.

The only thing i can think of is that the platter might have been getting pressed, but i didnt think that button did anything on the standard 400 map?

has anyone else had a similar problem? Could it have been my actual computer platform rather then the controllers? I've driven 2x 400's before in a diffrent environment and never had any issues what so ever. If it is the bass, does anyone have any solution that will fix it without me having to cut the bass out of the track?

Oh and I know for a fact the bass was effecting the decks because I would cue up a track and then the cue point would wander slowly to the left or right as the bass kicked in.

This can occur with any controller unit if it is in vinyl emulation mode just like CD players and turntables. The bass is vibrating the jog wheel and causing this to happen. If you are not scratching take your 400 out of vinyl mode and see if that alleviates the problem, it should.

If you need your unit to be in vinyl mode then you will either to need to insulate them with a rubber or foam mat underneath and/or move your speakers away some. Try different things to find what works best for you...

Hi Rhemy.

An old trick I used to use when doing club installs was to sit a concreate paving slab under each of the turntables. Next to lead, concreate is one of the best deadning materials you can get hold of. Its cheap too.

hmm, thanks guys I'm going to try taking it out of vinyl mode for now. I do use vinyl mode occasionally and i think there was a correlation between it skipping and the decks being in vinyl mode. Will try some deadening material but its strange the it happened coz the sub is a good 10 m away. Everything is made of wood however between the booth and the sub....
