Topic: Is there a way.......(codec question)

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Is there a way to install an mp4 video codec to Windows Media Player, so i can change the way VDJ decodes my mp4's.
I want to change the settings from VDJ's video decoder to Windows Media Player video decoder. For some reason my lappy doesn't like mp4's to much, my cpu is always working hard when i load mp4's. Any other files like vob, avi, etc. run perfect.

I've already installed the ffdshow plugin from windows website which enables me to play mp4's thru Windows Media Player perfectly, but when i change the settings on VDJ it does not decode the video part of the file, all i hear is the audio.

Any Ideas?

Here is how to set up playback of files in mp4 container through Windows Media Player Video Decoder.

I discovered that this can be done using Sonic MP4 Demultiplexer.
-download files here: http://www.volnafm.com/util/Sonic_Shared.zip
-unpack files to your [c:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic Shared] folder and system32 folder [C:\WINDOW\Ssystem32]. I don't know where it should be exactly but it won't hurt to place in both.
-register the file using method
-Click on Start > Run...
-To install the files, type: regsvr32 sonicMP4Demux.ax

Now ffdshow video decoder should use Sonic MP4 Demultiplexer to play mp4 files with Windows Media PLayer. Check if Windows Media Player can play mp4 files now. If yes then it should work in VDJ.

If no then download DirectShow filter manager from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/DirectShow_Filter_Manager.htm
and use it to give high priority to Sonic MP4 Demultiplexer and ffdshow filters and low priority to all other filters.
Make sure h.264 and AAC decoding is enabled in ffdshow video and audio configuration.

Also consider to convert all videos to one format. I dicided that I will use Divx/XviD for video and MP3 for audio compression. According to my tests this format works very fast in VDJ and doesn't make VDJ unstable. MP4 files work much slower in VDJ for some reason.

Thank you, i will try this a.s.a.p.

it's giving me this error when i try to run/install

LoadLibrary("sonicmp4demux.aux") failed - The specified module can not be found

Any ideas?

On my crappy work laptop (Compaq nc6400), I installed the k-lite codec pack and a crooklyn clan mp4 only uses about 15-20% cpu. My DJ computer on the otherhand barely reaches 10%, uses the same k-lite codec pack.

Have you tried updating your video drivers?

What kind of Windows do you have? I took those files from Vista and installed on XP. All worked.
Try to do second part with DirectShow filter manager.

@ kamakuakane

i've already downloaded and install the k-lite pack, i can get WMP to play mp4's but when i change the decoder on VDJ to WMP it does not play/decode.

what kind of settings/steps did you use to be able to decode mp4's using windows media player thru VDJ?

I installed Windows XP Pro. Installed the k-lite codec pack, standard installation. Did not make any changes to the k-lite codec pack, just default settings. Installed virtual DJ. I will have to check my virtual DJ settings later this week. I can say that it is not set to WMP. I do use an ATI video card.

i have xp pro also and i installed the standard k-lite pkg. i use an ati video card so basically we have the same specs. i did not made any changes in vdj settings (i have it as video decoder), i can't see the difference tho. mp4's still run kind of heavy on the cpu.
let me know what kind of settings you have when you get a chance......Thanks

does vdj uses it's own video codecs? or it pulls them from the OS.

example: mp4 set to video decoder (where does vdj look for to decode)

i have a show on saturday (tomorrow) which i'll be using most of my mp4's.......as you can see i need help desperately

Any Teamers out there????

thanks tayla good info in those two threads.......still nothing, i can't get them to play using windows media player video decoder Grrrrrr!!!

sorry they didn't work out, hopefully cstol will get his eye on the thread and jump in, i know he's busy just now so here's hoping for ya...

don't know how many files you got but is converting them to mpg2 an option? or at least the ones you want to use on the night may give you a bit breathing space until your sorted....

thanks again tayla, yeah i probably will end up converting the ones i need for now, i got a few mp4's wouldn't wanna convert all of them.

i just received an answer to the ticket that i submitted to the Team and they said that the mp4 issue should be fix in the next update.

i guess we just have to wait.........

have a good un'
