Topic: have genre tag choice drop down when editing
I wish Virtual DJ would give me a choice drop down when editing the genre tag of all the genre in the data base just like the filter menu.

Open up the info tab on the right side of the browser. When you click on the genera tab a drop with a list of genres appears 👍🏾

It does, but it doesn't show all the genres, at least not for me anyway

I also have trouble with it. I use genres separated with ";". It does not show the individual genres, but some list that was fitting for a song, so i usually cannot use it. I'd prefer to be able to select a few individual genre tags instead. (I see "trap; latin; urban" that I need to select as a whole, instead of "trap" "latin" "urban" which could be be selected as I see fit.

It would also be nice to be able to select what goes in the list to have acess to the most used ones.

That Man Bryn is right it doesn't show all the genre in my database it shows just a few.

There is no pre-defined genre list. Nor the ID3V2 tag standards call for one.
So, the field is called genre, but it's just a text field you can type anything. It's not a controlled field.
If VirtualDJ was to show you a list then it should also allow you to edit the list / add new items.
This would just add more complexity on a field that's just meant to be typed..

When I click on the genre field in the side info panel, a list pops up with some of the text (genres) I have previously entered for other tracks. It would be extremely useful if that pop up showed all the text (genres) that I had entered. I wouldn't expect it to show a list of every available genre there ever was, that would be crazy!

Filling out all your genres in the favourite genre setting panel does create a list of everything in the sideview. Bit laborious but does the job

Even if it was only showing the genres used in your library, how big would that be?

How big is your library and how many genres of music do you have?

I wouldn't imagine you'd entered a genre for every track yourself, so there could be genres that were assigned by the artist/label when you purchased the track(s).

Therefore how could you ever be sure it was showing all of them, and how is having to look for a genre from a massive list quicker than just typing it in?

During my prep process I change the genre of the track to fit into my list of 35 genres, I then use the tag 1 field to be more specific for the vibe of each.

So for me, picking a genre from that list is quicker than typing it in each time.

OK but restricting yourself to only 35 genres is very specific to you. I think it's safe to say most DJs wouldn't do that, so the list would be extremely large and unmanageable.

I just tried here and yes the first list is small, but clicking 'edit' brings up a much larger list.

The large list is alphabetical so not practical if what you want is off screen at the bottom.

I think a good solution would be to have a system that monitored your typing, so if you entered R it would then only shows genres starting with R. If the 2nd letter is E then it updates to show RE.....

Ahh now that's interesting as when I click edit I just got a blank panel, it's only after I filled them all in from the settings panel that they appeared, did yours populate itself?

Yes I agree with the monitoring system, that would be a great addition.

If you only have 35 genres that you normally use, most of the time the genre you need should be in the drop-down, since it already sorts the genres by how many times they are used, and filtered by close bpm range.
