Ok folks. Even a fresh settings xml and these both sound horrible.

Do I need to remove any errant ini files?

Settings for effects are in Documents\VirtualDJ\Plugins
For the internal effects, you will find them there as native_flanger.ini etc...

I deleted the ini files and it recreated them. All is well again.
