Would it be prudent to backup the old settings xml and have 8.1 create a new one?

It is not necessary, but not harmful either.
Currently, while using v8 and 8.1 paralell there are very few settings (those that are new with 8.1) that don't get saved or could change your v8 settings.
I.E. The RMP 4 beat option is not available in v8. If you set it in v8.1 and than use v8 again, your Jogwheels will only move with 4 rotations/minute.
Once only v8.1 could be used, there should be no problems anymore.

I don't think there's a reason to go back to v8 once you are on v8.1. The stability improvements in 8.1 are excellent, even if you don't use Shazam or GeniusDJ.

Kinda figured that. By clearing the reg for 7.x builds, it cleared up a bit of funky quirky issues...
And the only changes from default, are very minor.
